How do I rig my bait?

I am going to be hunting a small lake in East Texas. I want to use a rig that juts out about 8-10 feet from a shore line. I want to use a 2X4 or something similar that I can lean onto a t-post type object (similar to a shhoting stick). I could then lean the 2X4 over the t-post (that is secure in the bottom of the lake) and then hang the bait on the under side of the 2X4 secured by several rubber bands. The gator could easily break the rubber bands and the line would fall off of the 2X4 and t-post. The line would be tied around the trunk of a very large tree....any ideas on this?

im not sure about texas but i think the only state you can legally leave lines set is Lousina.

But find a nice tree with a branch over hanging in the water tie the line to the base of the tree run it up to a branch that over hangs above the water. wrap it a couple of times or use rubber bands as stated...

thanks....yeh u can use lines in Texas...i dont have a lot of limbs to choose from. Do you think using a board and the t-post idea to angle the bait high enough would work?
