Favorite Gator Hunting Area

How do you decide on the area you are going to apply for?
Close to Home?
Just a favorite location that you are familiar with?
Do you select it by pre-scouting for size or high population of gators?
Or do you just go for the unknown trying a new location?

How do you decide on the area you are going to apply for? Close to Home within 20miles.

Just a favorite location that you are familiar with? Na im actually trying new locations this year i have a lot since i live in brevard county.

Do you select it by pre-scouting for size or high population of gators? I did this year i tried for lake jessup since it seems there are monsters in there.

Or do you just go for the unknown trying a new location? This year yes. Im trying all local lakes this year.

How much are you selling just the darts this year?

I'm also probably going to post a DIY headlight this year. The fog light work last year but its time to upgrade as i didnt like the smell it produced, lol...
I will be making one using a 4509 air craft light. Going to have the same look the "commerical" ones do. I think the one a made this year looks good. and its light weight.

We are looking to stay close to home too, but depends on how the first drawing works out and whats available in the third.

Prices on gear will stay pretty much the same as last year.

Do you get a narrow beam from the aircraft light? Are you using a dimmer, if so what are you using? I got one of the 100watt prowler lights but I ended up making a cowling to keep the beam from hitting on the boat.

Do you get a narrow beam from the aircraft light? Yes i did. I actually went over board i think lol. I order 2 different lights a ar111 with an 8 degree beam. You cant see as far but it so much lighter on your head. and the 4509 which is a great light. Probably the best in my opinion.

Are you using a dimmer, if so what are you using? Actually i didnt last year although i saw the need for one. Last year i had to keep lifting the light up and it would still spook the gator. i learned a lot from last yr as i asked the same question about the headlight and dimmer. Well the answer to your question is yes i do plan on using one this year. Im using a 12v DC motor controller to dim the light. Ez enough huh. When dimming the light there is a noticable hum coming from the unit. but hey it only 20.00 compared to the 60.00+ ones there selling and i dont know if they hum. And you can put in battery compartment. And run the wires to the location and drill a (1/2in hole the the concole for the knob.) and the tone wont be noticeable. Its not loud. And doesnt get hot.

Did you find another option for the dimmer. A simple one from autozone wont work because the amps from a 100w are to hot and i believe the at wattage it pull has to go somewhere and well melt the crap out of the unit.

Have you used a crossbow? If so whats your opinion on it? Worth it?

Do you use beef lung and if you do where do you get it?

Also would like to meet you this year so you can show me how to snag hook.lol I dont get it and i never see there bubble trail in the night in the morning yes. I need some tips lol....

I got one of the 100watt prowler lights but I ended up making a cowling to keep the beam from hitting on the boat.... Did you get it from rat works?

I picked up an automotive dimmer, it looks like it can handle the heat, but I will test it out the next couple weeks. Sometimes we may use a lesser powered light to approach the gator or keep our light pointed up so it will barley light up its eyes.

Haven't used a crossbow, but we set one up last year but did not use it.

We used pig lung, got it from butcher in Zephyrhills area, called ahead of time to see when they would be butchering.

To snatch hook we try to get them on the surface and cast over them. Or if they just sink cast across them or drift up to where they went down and drag the hook around in location you last saw it, sometimes they just sink down and lay on the bottom within a couple of feet of where they went down. If the bottom is right there will be bubbles where they went down and if they move along the bottom they will leave a bubble trail. Depending on how the Third round goes we get an extra permit for Hell N Blazes, but we are trying to stay closer to home.

I got my light from Floral City Airboats its just like the ones Jeff Leserra sells.
